A Brief History
The history of the Utrecht canals began at the beginning of the 12th, when the aptly named Oude Gracht was dug through the Utrecht city center. Over the centuries, the Utrecht canal belt was slowly but surely expanded and the canals began to play an increasingly important role. The canals attracted many merchants, who went to live on the canals and built the well-known Wharf cellars. In the meantime, the canals have not been used for trade and transport for many years. However, this does not make them less important. The Utrecht canal belt is iconic for the city center and offers residents and visitors opportunities for relaxation and fun.

The most beautiful canals of Utrecht
The Oude Gracht is the oldest, most famous and, according to many, the most beautiful canal in Utrecht. Around and on this canal – which runs right through the heart of Utrecht – there is a lot to do. Think of taking a boat trip, renting a pedal boat or ‘just’ sitting on the terrace. In addition, Utrecht has several other beautiful canals. Take for example the Nieuwegracht, the Kromme Nieuwegracht, the Plompetoren gracht, the Drift and the Stadsbuitengracht. There is also more than enough to do and experience on and around these canals.
